A 35-year-old Jersey City man charged with strangling his wife in 2014 will face up to life in prison plus 15 years if convicted at trial after turning down the prosecution's final plea offer yesterday. The state made its final offer to Kevin Montone -- who has been in Hudson County jail since September 2015 -- a 30-year prison sentence in exchange for a guilty plea to a murder charge at a hearing in Hudson County Superior Court. Judge Patrick Arre set Feb. 26 as Montone's trial date. Montone appeared at the hearing yesterday in an orange jumpsuit. He did not speak during the appearance, except to say that he understands how much prison time he faces if convicted. On Aug. 18, 2014, police and ...     EMTs responded to 124 Sycamore Road after getting a 911 call from the home and found Montone's wife, Monica Montone, 34, dead inside the house.

Kevin Montone and his 2-year-old son were at the home at the time. Montone is also charged with endangering the welfare of his son because police found heroin "strewn about their home," Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Linda Claude-Oben said at yesterday's plea cutoff hearing.
Montone was laughing uncontrollably, an appeared incoherent at times when officers placed him in a police vehicle that day. He was originally charged with drug offenses and posted a $35,000 bail.
In December 2014, he was charged with his wife's murder after an investigation by the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office determined Monica Montone's "cause of death was asphyxia due to neck compression," and the manner of her death was ruled a homicide. He then posted a $250,000 bail.
Almost 10 months later, Montone was charged with robbery after authorities say he grabbed a woman's purse on Sept. 15, 2015. People came to the woman's aid and held Montone until police arrived, officials said at the time.
After being charged with robbery, a judge raised Montone's bail on the murder charge to $300,000 cash or bond. A $50,000 bail was added for the robbery charge. He has remained in custody ever since
